What Is Green?

Carbon Footprint
The sum of carbon emissions associated with a lifestyle, building or activity. This term is usually used to illustrate the higher or lower amount of carbon dioxide emitted between otherwise comparable alternatives, such as the difference between shipping products by air (which has a large carbon footprint), or driving them using biodiesel (which has a low carbon footprint); living in town near where you shop and work (low carbon footprint), or commuting 45 minutes to work.

Carbon-neutral
A term used to describe a building design that consumes no fuels that will release carbon dioxide, or a design that has used renewable fuels as energy sources to ensure that the total production of carbon dioxide related to the project is zero.

Green
This is a general term meaning "environmentally conscious" in whatever way you choose. Usually having some relation to energy efficiency and/or sustainability.

Green Roof
A roof of a building that is covered with vegetation over a waterproof roof membrane. Green roof may additional refer to a roof that is not necessarily covered with vegetation but instead uses some form of green technology to cover the roof such as solar panels or a heat reflective membrane coating.

Hybrid
A combination of traditional (i.e. fossil-fuel burning) energy sources and more-efficient, lower-impact ones. Usually used in reference to cars, the most famous example being Toyota's Prius.

Organic
1) Simple, healthful, and close to nature; 2) Referring to plants or animals that have been raised under specific conditions mandated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (or equivalent government agency in other countries), without the use of pesticides, artificial hormones, radiation, and the like.

Sustainable
Refers to resources that, if used wisely, can sustain life on earth indefinitely.
